If the grain is too bumpy it may be hard to glue something to it, or in some cases it might be easier depending on what the second material is. Another issue is the weight of the wood. If you are building something to be light weight, of course you’d like to use balsa wood. However, it also has to be strong you might have to go with Pine, or a plywood.
Nevertheless, whichever wood you choose for whatever project you are doing, it makes sense to have a good amount of various types of wood already on hand as you choose how to go about your project. Please consider all this.

Sure you could just grab a piece of scrap and practice the cuts but where is the fun and challenge in that?
